Biographies of Sorrowful Satis : Novels written by women in nineteenth century Bengal
The women novelists of nineteenth century Bengal, except perhaps Swarnakumari Devi, have been lost in the oblivion of history. The present book discovers quite a few of them and analyses their works in the light of the contemporary socio-political conditions. The novels were produced by a complex configuration of colonialism, nationalism, tradition, modernity, patriarchy, education and various other ideological factors being played out in the lived reality as well as in discursive practices impinging on women’s lives and minds. Despite the inevitable influence of male novelists and an unflinching allegiance to patriarchy, the novels did record the writers’ very own female subjectivities in an interesting manner.
